Conviction: Armed Robbery
Last year we appealed for information regarding two armed robberies, one in Betfred in Newport and the other in William Hill in Caerleon.
Back in July 2016, a 43 year old man from the Chepstow area was arrested in connection with these offences.
Gareth Williams was charged with two counts robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Detective Sergeant Matthew Edwards, who led the investigation said: "These incidents were terrifying and distressing for all the victims involved. In both cases Gareth Williams threatened staff at the bookmakers with what appeared to be a firearm before demanding money and making off.
Gareth showed no regard for his victims and intended to callously scare and steal from them. The incident could have resulted in tragic consequences and Gareth has left his victims living with the aftermath of his actions. We hope today's sentencing will offer some closure and peace of mind to those effected.
The sentence passed down reflects the gravity of these offences and proves we will relentlessly pursue and bring to justice anyone who commits crime in Gwent.'
